I Still Walk Barefoot(ed)

I have been slacking as a blogger, which may or not be worth caring about but I do miss you dear junebugfuneral. I miss your blinking cursor and I miss blog entries from Mimi and other wonderful/funny people. The obsession with Tumblr and sites in which one simply collects images have been bumming me out. It's reminiscent of the lists teenage girls make of things they like. Mine included the moon, paper lanterns and walking barefoot. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAME. haha. I like this hat, this fucking hat defines me. OK i'm tired if you can't tell. Anyhoo I vow here and now to post some show reviews soon. I know I am not good at it but surely people would rather read my 2 cents on local music over my pointless personal rants. Speaking of which, The Grisly Hand just finished our 10th show in 5 weeks or something like that. Last night was a wedding and also marked Chas's final set with Gris. It makes me sad but I know he's going to do something really badass and that we'll s...

Signs

Something you thought was dead and buried will be reborn today. You're pretty well known for your intense moods, and today shows at least one of them off for the whole world to see. The good news is that it's largely positive, so people like what they see!

But You Just Met Somebody New

Image
okay this is pretty effin' close to techno for ol' krum BUT I LOVE ROBYN! She's back in action!!! Does anyone else think she looks like a Peggy Noland/SSION person? KC STEEZ OUTTA SWEDEN! Also, 0:28 is now how I plan on entering all parties. i wanted this video to be cooler. i think the problem is that the song kinda sucks. also, if girls run the world why do we still have to crawl on the ground for half our music video? Back to Robyn. GOD I LOVE HER MESSED UP TEETH. REAL AS FUCK. hang with me!! always such a problem- ppl falling recklessly in love with me. AMIRITE?

I Love(d) Mariah Carey

Image
This video is my favorite so we'll start here. This video and song, the first track from her 1993 album "Music Box", captures the bubblegum-sweet romanticism of my childhood so well. Dreamlover come rescue me! At least until dreamlover shows up Mariah gets to hang with 2 dozen super foxy dancers and her best friend rockin' a pixie cut. This is the 90's at it's best & most innocent. Beautiful flowing curls, flowers, denim shorts, flannel shirts and fine black dudes doing the butterfly and the crybaby. This was also released in the time just after Mariah married Columbia records executive Tommy Mottola. "Always be My Baby" skips ahead to 1995. 5th grade Lauren was heavily influenced by the album "Daydream". If this isn't an iconic 90's song I don't know what is. I swear pretty much any woman around my age can sing the hell out of this song right down to the vocal noodles present through ought (in typical Mariah-fashion.) This ...

Twin Shadow (George Lewis Jr. If You're Nasty)

Image
yep, this guy. if someone from Grizzly Bear is involved in something i'm usually fairly interested. Grizzly's bass player (and resident moon faced super white dude who kind of creeps me out in that one exploding head video) Chris Taylor, who co founded Terrible Records, produced Twin Shadow's first album "Forget". In addition to my affinity for all things Grizzly (and grisly) I've been exploring further reaches of music I sometimes gloss over or don't listen to enough. I'm sure there's a Nick Ahloe out there with a canon packed full of snarky bits about "hipster bullshit" but oh well. Sometimes I just want to listen to a guy from the Dominican Republic with a Little Richard approved hairstyle serve up some chilled out 80's vibes. Twin Shadow is definitely music for long car rides and sweaty summer nights. Check out his website and watch a video here . ALSO! Just watched this video from the deliciously poppy locals Hidden Pictures...

Robin Pecknold "I'm Losing Myself"

Pretending Not That I Don't Know

My dreams last night were strange, perverse and scary. I'd call people to see if they were okay if it didn't make me seem less so. I've already had a recent dream related "coincidence" and don't need to feed my anxieties about having one on the scale of my mother's. I digress. I am looking forward to a weekend free of performing and looking forward especially to our show with L5 at Davey's May 6th. Those dudes are pretty cool. Watch the video for "Winded Road" here . I don't know the name of the first song but it's a jam. For "Winded Road" fast forward to 3:33. Note the laughing creepy "PIZZA POWER" logo. I was at this show and not only was the band terrific but cute long haired women served me homemade pizza. Sometimes Lawrence wins. (Only sometimes.) The Grisly Hand Sour Babies L5 (Lawrence) Davey's Uptown May 6th, 9:00 pm $5.00? 21+ FUCKIN GO

I'll Kiss Them Sweetly

Image
Man. Can you imagine a male artist being called, "The Male Patsy Cline"? Sure can't. Why then would they cripple her career and put a fucking tether on her potential by calling her "The Female Elvis"? The past sucks sometimes. Love, The Female Gimli From Lord Of the Rings

Tunnels

i wish i had the bones for a ticket to their Starlight show. i'm playing Funeral at work right now. i talked to nick d. the other night about how i abandoned this album because it made me too sad but i think i can enjoy it now. i do miss richie & wyndra when i hear certain songs. Funeral and Good News for People Who Love Bad News (Modest Mouse) came out right around that time. shitty 2004. going to see cellist Helen Gillet ("jill-lay") from New Orleans tonight at Grunauer. Ye ol' german restaurant.

When You're Runnin' For The Door In The Rain

Image
being alive is funny. Nichelle and Johnny had their 2nd child, a beautiful little baby son, Everett Forrest Nichols. how strange to exist where once you did not. birth is a trip, obviously. the very first trip i suppose. i never reviewed those shows. i am a total pud. will post some reviews on MMF's site soon. here's some songs i've been enjoying lately. Katy Goodman i adore you. can't we just cuddle? I just wanna touch your hair.

Dweebs And Pizza

Image
i have pages and pages in my notebook about all the shows i've seen lately but i don't have the fucking internet. i know it doesn't matter and most likely no one at all cares, but it makes me feel like a dweeb or writing all my stupid critiques and notes and down for naught. dude from the pizza power house probably thinks i was just some crazy. at least i got pizza out of the deal. 3.7.11 - pizza power house: L5, Netherfriends (Chicago/Austin) and Cloud Dog 3.9.11 - the brick: White Mystery (Chicago) 3.10.11 - crosstown station: Sour Babies, L5 & Dream Wolf 3.11.11 - record bar: grisly hand(woo), Austin Lucas and Drag the River 3.14.11 - the brick: rural grit feat. Dually Jukes (Mark Smeltzer/David Regnier) 3.15.11 - the brick: John Greiner, Brian Frame, Pioneers (Wisconsin?) it's no wonder i'm exhausted, close to broke and receiving noise complaints from my neighbors. single and livin' the rock n roll lifestyle. WHAT NOW? Nichelle is in labor wit...
