Other Find Pleasure In Things I Despise

Well my bold foray into firing my blog back up has been both delightful and filled me with a sense of shame as I've "slacked" off. But then, who is counting? Blog God. I'm so happy I'm not sitting at a desk anymore and not again in the foreseeable future.

My musical discovery lately has been more organic - listening to what others are psyched about, going to shows and even, gasp - creating music with new people! I tried and failed to see the Y La Bamba and Dana Louise & The Glorious Birds show at Uptown Arts Bar last Monday (I was late.) But I got to hang out with and trade some songs with Dana and her current touring band (a bunch of homies) later that evening. If you haven't heard Dana sing in person from her teeth to your ears you need to make it happen. The next morning after hearing her sing with Noah, Fritz and Zac I was still like, "DAMN!"

Here's some wom focused stuff I've been jammin' to. As a dear friend said lately it's a non wom world sometimes.

The B Side of this release has kazoo. If you know me you'll know that's about as goofy as I can tolerate. Her honeyed and weary vocals ground her songs and shit - taking yourself too seriously isn't good for your health.

This Winnipeg band can seemingly do no wrong. This collection of covers, featuring one brief original which feels more like a stirring instrumental prelude for a Nico cover, is hauntingly lovely. Though I have to ask if "These Days" needed to get any more smoky or melancholy. Definitely listen to "I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire".

Delfina Campos hails from Buenos Aires but serves up dreamy, 80's mom approved pop that evokes California sunsets and feels perfect for an indie movie soundtrack. At times the production is a bit distracting and seems to outweigh her sentiments but her voice and passionate delivery drives the album to higher ground. Check out "Lento" and "Fiebre".

Another NOLA chanteuse stops me in my tracks. She's about as airy and aloft vocally as one can be without falling almost entirely into something Vaudevillian. I love how unabashedly feminine and playful her songs are. Very interested to see what she does going forward.
