Are You Friend or Foe? See I've Really Got To Know.
I like how I've been "off" facebook in some capacity for a couple days and already feel a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in life. Or perhaps I'm just paying attention to what I love and what inspires me and it turns out that feels good. Anyhow - while tippity tapping through Bandcamp (who's app I recommend highly) on Friday afternoon I discovered Esther Rose and what at first seemed likeable has turned into a highly lovable record that I've now listened to several times.

Here is her page on Bandcamp which provides a lot of information and allows you to listen to her first full length release, "This Time Last Night" which was recorded in April 2017 at Mashed Potato Studios. The band sounds incredible here both in their modest arrangements and restraint as well as their obvious devotion to Hank Williams-era sound. This was recorded to tape like a motherfucker as I'd say in person.
The record features:
Lyle Werner - fiddle (of The Leveetoppers), Matt Bell - lap steel (of Roochie Toochie and the Ragtime Shepherd Kings, he also played in the original iteration of The Deslondes, The Tumbleweeds) , Callie Millington - bass & vocals (touring band member for Hurray for the Riff Raff), Esther Rose - acoustic guitar & vocals and Cameron Snyder - drums, electric guitar & vocals (This dude is also in the Deslondes!)

There's something about her delicate voice that conveys strength and resolve. She sounds like a woman who made herself learn guitar so she could play the songs that "wouldn't leave her" alone - because that's who she is. A Detroit native - she moved to the Holy Cross neighborhood in NOLA in 2010. The quality of playing here suggests that she's quickly earned the respect from some of the scene's finest. Even her label has had to level up:
Looks like they met their goal which great news because I'd love to own "This Time Last Night" on vinyl. Just seems right. I haven't posted any videos as I feel the album stands on it's own and sounded more impressive than some of the available footage.
Definitely someone to watch. But don't get too smug because she's already toured with Pokey LaFarge and appears on Jack White's new record.

Favorite tracks: "Friend or Foe", "Wanton Way of Lovin" and "Jump Down Baby". But hey it's all gorgeous. Go Esther!
