To Jeer At Hunger - Basa Basa

Once a rare collector's item this Afrobeat/Disco masterpiece can now be found via the Vintage Voudou label out of the Netherlands. Released in 1979 (Originally known as the "Basa Basa Experience"- Together We Win") this album announces it's deviation from traditional Ghanian music and afrobeat with synthesizers, disco elements and production choices that are about a decade ahead of themselves. If you can't get the fancy album (with poster) you can still shake your tail feather and stream it above.

Original LP Cover including alternative title.

Homowo is actually a festival in Ghana that starts in May before the rainy season begins. The word itself means "To hoot (or jeer) at hunger" in reference to periods of famine brought on by lack of rain. You can read more about it below.

Here are some pictures from a couple different Homowo Festivals in Ghana.

Favorite tracks: "Together We Win", "Shey An Kuri" and "Homowo"

On an only slightly related note - writing about this made me think of Basa the fish. Mad Jack's had some bomb Basa but I always got vaguely sexually harassed at the Troost location and stopped going. Like - what does it matter if I'm single? I am going home to eat fried fish with reckless abandon.  Anyway - for zero harassment and 100% delicious Basa (and catfish) check out Game Day Chicken Wings and Fish at 8950 Wornall Road. They are a black owned, family run business serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner and featuring a cool FIVE stars on Yelp. (I know Yelp is like snitch city but- y'know.) They also have a huge patio. The game day moniker is slightly misleading as they do feature several small TVs but the sound is never on as they've opted for sweet muzak. LOL.
