Biased Musical Horoscope / Next Two Weeks

My horoscope called me out for being all fired up about everything but work. The audacity.

Me making plans and not considering any other factors.

Anyway here's some things I'm excited about!

Friday, March 30th - CS Luxem/Fullbloods/Jim Button & The Beholders (The Brick)

If you're not hip to Fullbloods - stop what you're doing, sorry boss, and listen to "Mild West" their 2015 release on High Dive Records. You can also give them your money and download it here.  Fun fact, I played in an ELO cover band with Ross Brown the lead songwriter for Fullbloods. He also recorded Fritz Hutchison and I doing a few folkie songs last year in his basement complete with trippy LED lighting. ::rips bong::

Saturday, March 31st - "Eat Local & Organic Expo" at Johnson County Community College
10am - 3pm, "In the Gym" and no entrance fee!

Saturday, March 31st - "Oddities & Curiosities Expo 2018" at KCI Convention Center
11am - 5pm, $5.00 gets you in the door. If you're like me and the prospect of smol skeletons, weird jewelry and other bizzarre items increases your heart rate - don't miss this!

Saturday, March 31st - Havilah Bruders and Triple Play at Chaz on the Plaza. Not only is Havilah a wonderful singer she's one of the most down to earth, badass ladies I know. Chaz is great for a switch up in your routines - because it's a "hotel bar" it kind of feels like you're somewhere else.

Monday, April 2nd - Paul Cherry (Chicago), Drugs and Attics & Shy Boys at MiniBar (8pm)
Paul Cherry's lo-fi, yacht club sound complete with whip smart lyrics will be a great fit with Shy Boys. Both Paul Cherry and Shys have new albums on the horizon so this is a great chance to catch them both with slightly less fanfare than an album release.

Tuesday, April 3rd - Open Mic Night at Uptown Arts Bar featuring Christian Acamo. I'm interested to hear her live - should be a dreamy, emo time. If you have something to get off your chest sign ups are at 9:00pm - Acamo is on at 10pm. In general if you're looking for a queer friendly, safe space to share comedy, poetry, music or unicycle juggling this is a great spot. They host several open mics (as well as dance parties and a multitude of events) throughout the month. Monday - comedy, Tuesday - music, Wednesday - poetry. Check out their website for details. You can also catch my sweet friend Alison Hawkins on Tuesday, April 17th!!!

Wednesday, April 4th - The Project H: CD Release at Westport Coffee House.
Here's a video of Ryan  Heinlein the band leader ("H") talking about the new record. This band is really good and I feel under qualified to tell you why but just take my word for it anyway. They are creative, funky, weird enough without making me feel like I need an adult - all the good jazz tings plus the band is comprised of super solid and kind dudes. I did a show with them a couple years ago and even though I kind of beefed it (i honestly breathed like 3x total - nervous!) it was a ton of fun.

Friday, April 6th - "Spring Awakening" at The Calico Beard & Mercantile. If celebrating Friday, Spring time and possibly receiving a $15.00 hair trim, braid or scalp massage sounds like a good time - this bud's for u. Help their darling staff celebrate 6 years on the West Side!

Friday, April 6th - Scruffy & The Janitors Album Release at Riot Room with Momma's Boy and Toughies. I saw S&TJ at the Lucky Tiger in St. Joseph, MO about 3 years ago randomly. I was just there to escape KC and do some vintage shopping and ended up perusing vintage dresses during their set. I liked them then and thought they had a lot of promise so they're probably really good now because I'm typically right.  ha! JK. I'm also interested in seeing both supporting bands as I haven't before. (Scruffy will also be at RecordBar May 12th if you're intrigued but not free.)

Friday, April 6th - Julien Baker with Tancred at The Granada Theater, Lawrence, KS. If you still tend the lil emo garden in your mind this is gonna be your jam. Julien Baker might be too sad for me but her songs are undeniably touching and she's a great writer.

Saturday, April 7th - Lorna Kay's One Night Stand at EJ's Urban Eatery (1414 W. 9th St.) 12pm-3pm. Brunch begins at 8:30 a.m. but unless you're some sort of competetive bbq bruncher you can sidle in later and catch some honky tonk music from ME and my homies Fritz Hutchison, Mike Stover, Matt Richey and Dan Loftus.

Saturday, April 7th - Lauren Krum Trio at Cleaver & Cork (1333 Walnut). Hi it's me again. I'll be playing with Jeffrey Ruckman and Mike Stover. And THIS TIME the piano is gonna be tuned so who knows what could happen. (BTW - if you're afraid of P&L you can park across the street, validate inside and basically pretend you're not there.)

Sunday, April 8th - SLEEP at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS. There's still a few tickets floating around if you smoke too much weed to remember which bands you like to smoke weed to.

I feel like this list lacks variety to some degree. I'm just gettin' back in the game here so don't blacklist me yet. If you know of any rad hip hop shows or anything else between now and April 8th - holla at ya girl.

Alright - I'll worry about the rest of April later. Stay sessy.
